FAQs, Rules, and Schedule

Welcome to Rare Pair Exchange 2013

This is our second Multi-fandom Rare Pair Exchange on Livejournal.

Fest FAQs:

1. This fest is to celebrate rare pairs in ALL fandoms. Canon or non-canon pairings are welcome.

2. For the purpose of this fest, a rare pair will be defined as a pairing that has less than 250 COMPLETED works of 1000 words or greater. Fandoms of any size are welcome.

3. Pairings can also include threesomes/moresomes.

4. You must have an Archive of Our Own (AO3) account to participate. If you do not have one, please send an email to us at rarepairmod@gmail.com with the email address you would like us to send the invite.

5. Before signups, we will have a nomination period for people to pick fandoms and relationships that they would like included in the fest. Each person can nominate five fandoms and five pairings. Please only nominate fandoms that you plan to offer to write or request to have written for you. Fandoms that only have one pairing nominated by the end of the nomination period will be removed from the tag list to prevent confusion as signups require at least two pairings per fandom.

6. In your signup, do not imply rank for pairings or otherwise specify a favorite pairing. There is no need to make the person you are assigned feel bad if you want something they are not comfortable writing. You can edit/delete your signup until signups close. There will be an option where you can select to request/offer ANY of the nominated pairings. Please don't select the option if you are not truly open to all of them.

7. Requester - Signups must include 3-5 fandoms from our list of nominated fandoms and participants must pick 2-5 relationships from each fandom. NO EXCEPTIONS. You will be matched on fandom and pairing alone. While the description section is optional, we strongly suggest you include squicks. Other things to consider are the inclusion of general likes, rating restrictions, prompt ideas, or anything else you’d like the writer to know. However, please remember that these are optional for the person assigned to you. If you have a lot to say, consider linking to a letter in your own journal with the extra details (like with Yuletide).

8. Offerer - You may offer between 3-10 fandoms with between 2 and 10 pairings per fandom. You can also choose to offer to write "any" pairing in a given fandom. Only sign up for fandoms you are comfortable writing. You are not obligated to write ALL pairings. Pick whatever you are comfortable with. You don’t have to write the fandom/pairing you were matched on if something else listed the person requested interests you. The only requirement is that the pairing is one requested and that none of the squicks be included. While it is not required, if possible use one of the requested prompts if provided. While the author will not be bound by the scenarios, creating something that blatantly disregards the recipient's likes/dislikes will not be accepted.

9. Crossover pairings are not allowed as part of your main signup; however, you can include such preferences in the optional description section of your signup. We will not match you on this, and it’s up to the discretion of the person assigned to you whether they decide that they’re up to such a challenge. There are no guarantees you will get a crossover if you request one.

10. If you have a problem with, any questions about, or cannot complete your assignment, please contact us immediately at rarepairmod@gmail.com.

11. This is an exchange fest, which means you must produce a fic for someone else. If you withdraw, it is harder for everyone involved. So please, think carefully if you have the time before signing up. If you withdraw and the person assigned to create something for you withdraws, you will not be assigned a pinch hitter. If you discover after signing up that you can't finish the fic in time, contact the moderators as soon as possible.

12. In the event we have issues matching someone, they will go out as a pinch hit right away. You can find the pinch hits here https://groups.google.com/group/rare-pair-pinch-hits.

13. Due to the nature of this fest, it is hard for extensions to be given. If you know you are going to default (not turn in your assignment by the due date), but can't finish your fic before reveals, please contact us immediately and send us your unfinished work. If you don’t have anything started or do not contact us, your assignment will automatically go up for pinch hits, and you will not be able to participate in the next fest.

14. NO WANK! Be respectful. Please realize that everyone has different likes/interests/dislikes.

Fest Rules:

1. All fics have to be a minimum of 1,000 words. There is no maximum word count.

2. No RPF.

3. Submissions may be any rating.

4. Submissions may be slash, het, femslash, or any combination of the aforementioned.

5. Betas are not required but strongly encouraged. Submissions with excessive spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors will be rejected. If your submission is rejected for this reason you can resubmit it after you've corrected your mistakes. We will have a beta sign up post for those that will need one.

6. As this is an anonymous exchange, do not post your story anywhere else or reveal your recipient to anyone until authors are revealed. After reveals you are welcome to post anywhere.

7. Stories can't be part of a previously posted series.

- June 1 through June 15th - Nomination Period
- June 17 through June 28 - Signups open
- July 1 - Assignments will be sent out by this date
- August 16 - Fics are due
- August 19 - Works are revealed
- August 28th - Authors are revealed

Please do not hesitate to contact us at rarepairmod@gmail.com if you have any questions/comments/concerns. We do not know about issues unless we are told. We promise not to bite. At least not hard. :)

Excellent, I'm so glad this is running again! I can't wait. ♥

Will matching be possible with a single pairing? For instance, if I offer A/B and C/D, and another participant requests C/D and E/F under the same fandom, can we be matched?
Jun. 2nd, 2013 01:45 am (UTC)
Yes. In fact, most people will only be matched based on one fandom/pairing. The system attempts to match people that have more than one fandom/pairing in common, but in most cases that is not possible.

For rule #2, is that 250 fics or less on AO3 or LJ or Tumblr or...? I nearly only read on AO3 for some pairings and they are woefully underrepresented but I don't have any idea what the fic count would be based on other sites.
Jun. 3rd, 2013 06:29 pm (UTC)
It's 250 on any single site. Mostly we just check AO3 and FF.net as they are the big ones. If something is borderline, we'll do a google search and see what we can find. Say a pairing had 120 fics on AO3, but 500 on FF.net. It would not be eligible. But if another pairing had 200 on AO3 and 200 on FF.net, it would be eligible. We don't add the counts from each site together as there is likely a good amount of crossposting between them.

Maybe I'm just being stupid but this is all really confusing to me. So, let me see if I've got it right.

Right now I can nominate fandoms. These have to be fandoms I will either offer or request in. When you say 5 maximum do you mean 5 pairings each for 5 fandoms so 25 nominations in total or 5 pairing with their fandoms so 5 nominations in total?

Then I request fic for 3-5 fandoms with pairings for each fandom. I get that. I can do that. I'm confused about the offering to write. I can offer 3-5 fandoms. Does that mean if I'm not willing to write for 3 fandoms I can't be part of this fest? Even if I'm willing to write basically any pair you can throw at me but only for one or two fandoms.

Yes, nominations are open right now. It's five pairings per the five fandoms, so a max of 25 pairings.

The signup form will require you to offer at least three fandoms. If you aren't able to offer that many, then you won't be able to sign up as it's automated. Something that you could do though is write treats aka writing unassigned fics based on a prompt that strikes your fancy. You wouldn't get anything in return though as treats are completely voluntary.

Ok, thank you for the prompt reply. I guess I'll put in my requests and then check out the list when it's done and hope for the best :)

I love a challenge! Yes, I would like to do this, please.
Jun. 5th, 2013 01:44 am (UTC)
Just found this by chance... looks like fun! The only thing I didn't get (sorry, I'm kinda slow I know!) is whether we have to post here in LJ or over at AO3... I already submitted my nominations over there!
Jun. 5th, 2013 01:47 am (UTC)
Everything (except pinch hits) is done on AO3. Here is just organization and support.
Jun. 5th, 2013 01:54 am (UTC)
Oh, cool... thank you for the quick response!
Jun. 5th, 2013 08:08 pm (UTC)
Sorry, just another little doubt! It's about the Ineligible Pairings... it says "If there is a fandom or pairing not on this list that you think should be added, please let us know."

But... where should I let you know that? Do I have to comment on that post? Because when I was working on my nominations, I stumbled upon some pairings that weren't on that list and are over 250 complete fics... I thought it would help with your list!
Jun. 6th, 2013 02:00 am (UTC)
You're welcome to comment on that post.
Jun. 17th, 2013 04:53 am (UTC)
Hi, I think not, but wanted to be sure. I am sign-up and did my 4 fandom requests, which leaves a possible fifth if I want. My question is, can I request the same fandom as one of the other 4, but with a different set of pairings? (all the other 4 are different fandoms).

The same goes for offers, I probably could offer to write for more pairings if I did this.

Thank you.
Jun. 17th, 2013 05:03 am (UTC)
The signup form requires that all fandoms be unique so you wouldn't be able to sign up for one twice. Sorry.
Jun. 17th, 2013 05:34 am (UTC)
Oh, okay! Thank you for the turbo reply.
Jun. 17th, 2013 01:32 pm (UTC)
Yes, I would like to do this, please.

About series. Aren't we allowed to include our works into already existing series, because that might shed light on who we are? Or is it because you think our work wouldn't be understandable if the giftee hasn't read the other fics in the series? In either case, would it be possible to add our fic to the series after the reveals are over?

I mean, I've seen series that simply collect fics based on subject matter (even something like "Author's favourites"), not because the stories are linked in any way.
Jun. 25th, 2013 10:27 pm (UTC)
We just mean it has to be able to be read as a stand alone fic. You're welcome to link it to a series like that after reveals.
Jun. 29th, 2013 10:33 pm (UTC)
Um, due to having somehow convinced myself that signups closed a day later than they really did, I didn't manage to get a link to my letter up with my signups. I've got a dear author letter up at the Dear Author post, but is there any way my recipient could be told that my letter can be found at: http://betony.dreamwidth.org/2306.html#cutid1?
Thanks, and I'm so sorry for the trouble!
Jun. 29th, 2013 10:37 pm (UTC)
We have the ability to edit signups after they're closed, so we went ahead and added it for you.
Jun. 29th, 2013 10:40 pm (UTC)
That is such a relief; thank you so much, and sorry again for the bother!
Jun. 29th, 2013 10:41 pm (UTC)
You're very welcome. It wasn't a bother at all.
Jul. 9th, 2013 01:43 pm (UTC)
I know it's still early, but you mentioned a beta sign up post in the rules? :)
Jul. 10th, 2013 11:01 pm (UTC)
Opps, we forgot to put it up. It's located here: http://rarepairsupport.livejournal.com/2257.html

Hello. I'd like to know if there's any hopes to open the exchange to art gifts as well (I mean paintings, not photomanips). I'm unable to write fics, and my English isn't so good sadly, but I'd like to signup if it's fine and art is ok for a gift. Please, let me know, thanks in advance. :)
May. 6th, 2014 10:02 pm (UTC)
We apologize for the huge delay in replying to your comment. Previously we hadn't included art as part of this fest, but we're allowing it this year. The updated rules that include the information should be up shortly.
Jun. 7th, 2014 04:30 pm (UTC)
Thank you, I'm glad for this and I can't wait to play. :)
